Faulty Power Supply

One of the first things you need to check is the wiring and outlet where your machine is plugged in. This may require you to pull or move the machine away from the wall so you can inspect the area. Make sure you have enough room to comfortably slip through and have space to get close to the outlet. This may be a rare circumstance, but it’s important to check this out because the outlet it is hooked up to may be short-circuited.

First, find a different outlet and plug in your washing machine. If your washing machine turns on with the new outlet, then you’ve found your issue. If it still won’t turn on, then go to your breaker box. Make sure the right circuit is live. Next, check the power cord with a multimeter if that all looks good. If the reading is inadequate, then replace the cord.

Thermal Fuse Not Working

If your washer overheats, this is the element that will turn the machine off. Over time, it can wear out and blow a fuse. In turn, your Whirlpool washer won’t turn on. Here are some steps to take:

  • Cut the power source to your washing machine
  • Locate your thermal fuse (refer to your manual if unsure)
  • Once it’s found, remove the thermal fuse and disconnect it too
  • Check the piece with a multimeter
  • If your thermal fuse fails the test, then you need to get a replacement
  • If it passes the test, put the fuse back into place and turn on the machine again to see if it works

Defective Line Fuse

The line fuse sits on the machine’s power cord and can blow during a power outage. This can also occur if your machine’s circuits are overloaded. Here is how to check the line fuse:

  • Turn the power off of your washing machine
  • Find the line fuse, and if you don’t know where it is, then flip through your washing machine’s manual
  • Run a multimeter over the line fuse
  • If it fails the test, then the line is broken and needs to be replaced
  • Once the new line has been installed, connect the power to your washing machine again to see if it will turn on
  • For some maintenance to avoid this, monitor the motor and drain pump

Door Lock Not Working

When you turn on the machine, add your detergent, and plug in the settings, you’ll hear a clicking sound. This means the door has been locked. If you no longer hear that clicking sound, then it means the door is broken. Before replacing this piece, do these steps:

  • Shut off the power supply
  • Find the door’s locking latch
  • Analyze it to ensure that no damage has taken place
  • Run a multimeter over the door
  • If the door fails the test, then you need to replace it
  • Replace your dishwasher door with a new one and turn the power back on to continue your load of laundry

Faulty Timer

When a washer won’t start, you might not think that the timer is the culprit. However, it monitors the cycle and lets the machine know what to do next. Here’s what to do:

  • Cut the power supply
  • Find the timer on your machine
  • Remove the timer from your machine
  • Run a multimeter over it
  • If it fails the test, then you need to buy a replacement
  • Once installed, you can plug in your machine and start your laundry again
